[GiDlist] Contact creation

Post by Arturo di Gioia »

Hi,
I'm trying to create a FEM mesh with GiD. I've got two volumes and I'd
like to duplicate the nodes at the interface (thus generating two meshes
with coincident surface mesh at the contact surface). In order to do it
I:
1) Duplicated the surfaces shared by the two bodies, using in 'copy'
command the options 'duplicate' and 'create contact'.
2) I defined the volumes of the two bodies using for each one different
surfaces.
3) I would like to mesh the bodies with quadratic tethraedra elements.

My questions are:
What is a 'contact volume'? I'm sorry, but reading the documentation
i've not be able to figure out what could it be. I read that this volume
can be meshed only with linear elements. Do normal volumes defined using
at least one surface with contact flag automatically become a contact
volume? I read also that it is possible not to mesh contact volumes. How
do I achieve this? I found no commands about contact meshes.

Thanks.

Hello,

The contact entity that joins the two volumes, the one created
when used 'copy' with 'duplicate' and 'create contact', is considered
by GiD as a Volume. In this way, it is possible to use the normal
GiD commands to operate on it. You can use:

Meshing-Elemtype-...
Meshing-Mesh criteria-...

and select this volume.

So, your model should have 3 volumes instead of just 2.

The only problem here for you is that the contact volumes do
not support quadratic elements.

Best regards,

See some brief explanation about the "GiD-contact" concept at:
