[GiDlist] STL files

Post by Jørgen Krabbenhøft »

Hi!

I have a question:
Given a stereolithography (STL) file, can GiD refine this mesh and moreover generate a volume mesh?

Jorgen:

I think I have the answer to your question: use the File | Import | Surface
Mesh command. This will create pseudo-nurbs from the stl mesh. You can
remesh these surfaces. You may also edit these surfaces to create volumes
(and maybe replace them with real nurbs).

When I try this I get the following reply:

Error in stl file
SMNode::EnterElem, NumOfSMelemsInFnode=75 must be increased

Well this is a limitation in the current version. Next version will accept this kind of nodes(which have more than 75 triangles adyacent to it). Anyway, one node having more than 75 adyacent triangles in an STL file means that that triangles have a quite closed angle, so that triangles are quite deformed.
