[GiDlist] Background mesh

Dear Sir.

Is it possible to somehow divide a quadrilateral mesh into a triangular one? I ask this because only triangular background meshes are allowed, yet I'm trying to apply an adaptive meshing scheme from data obtained on a quadrilateral mesh. If this is possible, I suppose that once I get the new mesh, I should be able to merge triangles back together so as to recover a quadrilateral mesh and then proceed on with an improved analysis. Am I right?

[GiDlist] Background mesh

Dear Mauricio,

You can divide a quadrilateral mesh into a triangular one using 'Mesh -
Edit Mesh-Split Elements - Quadrilateral-Triangle' option. Once you have
the new triangles they should work as the other triangular meshes, so you
can use them normally as a background mesh.

Note that the quadrilaterals can be splitted in two ways (symmetrically or
not) depending on the option 'Symmetrical structured', which can be set in
'Preferences - Meshing'.

As Abel explained, you can split GiD quadrilaterals into 2 triangles (without add nodes) or 4 triangles (adding a new central node), but probably you don't need to use this tool for your background mesh.
Your own solver can write the new background mesh file writting your quadrilaterals as two triangles and setting the new required nodal sizes.
