Hi,

I found the same problem. Note that this bug showed up in ver. 9.2.2,
but was not in 9.2.0

Hi:This is a very weird bug I found recently=2C because I was using this
ut= ility without any problems and suddenly start happening. I've tested
in ano= ther machine with different configurations and the results are
the same. I = though it was something related to my own customized
problem type but I use= an example problem type (cmas2d) and the
problem continues. I also try to = reinstall GiD by deleting the
application bundle from Applications and also= ~/.gidDefaults and then
run the installation package again... no luck :S I guess some recent
system update cause a conflict with GiD :S

-Open an existing GiD file or star a new one creating a Geometry and
select= ing a problem type.-Open the condition window=2C select any
condition and p= ush Assign button.-GiD Crashes!!
I'm attaching the apple report for this particular crash.

[GiDlist] Mac OSX: Some other minors bugs related menu conte

Post by Jesus F Gracia »

These are not critical as the one that crashes GiD caused by applying conditions to a model, which I agree with John Blottmam that this problem is only present on version 9.2.2b
Open a existing model causes stop refreshing Problem Type menu, to active it again it is necessary to invocate the open/save as window and click cancel.
After selecting a base unit system in a Problem units windows, the combo menu freezes and there is not way to select another base system. It is necessary to close and reopen the Problem units window.
If you post a new release fixing this bugs, it is possible to test it on Leopard Snow?
Greetings!

[GiDlist] RE: Mac OSX: Some other minors bugs related menu c

Post by miguel »

Hello,

I’ll try to reproduce the problems you mention, and keep you informed.

Currently I’m developing the Mac version on Mac OS X 10.5.7 and didn’t plan
to upgrade it to 10.6 as nobody I knew uses this latest release of Mac OS X.

Do you have the Leopard Snow (10.6) on your Mac?

Best regards,

[GiDlist] Visualization of fields at Tetrahedra Gauss Points

Post by Claudio AC Silva »

I am having problems when trying to visualize fields defined at Gauss Points
of tetrahedra elements if 10 Gauss Points are used (if the results are defined
at 4 Gauss Points of the same tetrahedra, there is no problem). First of all,
the fields at Gauss Points are only shown in "Contour Fill" and not in "Smooth
Contour Fill". Then, if I choose the visualization of any field defined at
Gauss Points in the "Contour Fill" option, GiD closes with segmentation fault.
The same happens if 10 Gauss points are "Given" or "internal".

I am using the last GiD version for Linux 64 and I am attaching two small
examples that cause those problems here. Is it a software bug or my
postprocess files are incorrect?

Thank you in advance,
Claudio

Dear ABEL,

Your explanation is quite clear. It perfectly solve my problem.Thank you very much for your fast reply.

Dear Chen,

If you want to generate a volume mesh using GiD, you must be in one of these two situations:

- topological closed set of surfaces. In this case, you can create the volume (Geometry-Create-Volume) and generate the mesh (Mesh-Generate).

- a conformal mesh which close a volume (each edge have HigherEntity==2). In this case, you can generate the volume mesh selecting (Mesh-MeshFromBoundary), and selecting all the triangles closing the volume. This option is only available from the Right Buttons (you can set them by clicking 'Utilities-Tools-Toolbars').

If I have understood well, you are not in one of these cases, so you will have to do some work to reach one of these situations.

Kind regards,

ABEL

[GiDlist] How to generate volume mesh out of surface mesh

Post by Hao Chen »

Dear ABEL and everyone,

I started from some simple cases, for example the rectangle, first mesh it by triangle, and then get the bounday mesh of linear segments. And then use the linear segments to generate the surface mesh. That works perfectly.

But, when I applied it to a little bit complex as a 3D case, some error appeared. Please see the attached msh file. I want to generate 3 rectanglar surface meshes from the linear elements, when I choose one rectangle to generate surface mesh, it said rejected 14037672 elements(must have the same z). I can guarantee each rectangle is on the same plane, and even I turn it into Z plane, it still give the same error.

Best regards,

Chen

[GiDlist] NURBS FEM postprocessing

Post by Ralph Echter »

Hello to GID support,

I have some question concerning postprocessing/ visualization of NURBS
FEM results.
I have written a small C Code using the preprocessor data of GID (knot
vector data, control point data, weights) for setting up my finite
element code which is so far only plane 2D.
What I obtain from my code are the discrete control point displacement
values. However what I cannot not find in GID is a method of how to plot
those results.
As GID provides me with all required data for defining NURBS basis
functions see above- knot vector data, control point data, weights- it
should normally be not too difficult to create some 2D geometry plot
(parametric plot using NURBS basis functions and control point data) as
well as 2D deformed geometry plots (parametric plot using NURBS basis
functions and control point data+discrete control point displacement
values).

Maybe you have some idea of how to visualize such kind of data .
Thanks in advance

Sincerely
Ralph Echter

[GiDlist] NURBS FEM postprocessing

Post by escolano »

Really GiD doesn't has specialized plots for NURBS-FEM results (where the
results are expressed as NURBS parameters: control points, weigths and
knots)

You must transform this kind of representation to a classical mesh results,
where you provide the results on the mesh nodes.

To do it, you need to use an auxiliary mesh (you can generate a GiD mesh)
and associate each node with the parametric coordinates on the NURBS
parametric space of the geometrical source entity.
You need to do the inverse of the parametrization: from a 3D node calculate
the u,v on each source NURBS surface, or directly create a mesh in the u,v
parametric surface space

Then for each result (also displacements) must calculate for each node the
result value (evaluating the NURBS expression of your results for the u,v of
the node)

Note that your NURBS results could be discontinuous between neighbor
surfaces: you will have multiple values for a node belonging to multiple
surfaces, maybe do you want to smooth this result to a single averaged value
!!

Then you can express your results in a classical way, with a GiD .post.msh
mesh file, and a .post.res results file, with nodal results (see GiD help to
know the format of this postprocess results file, or use our GiDPost library
to write them)

If you only want to plot the deformated shape, you can write a .geo GiD
geometry file, with the new geometric NURBS parameters, and you can compare
with the original shape.
to know the .geo ASCII format you can see
http://www.gidhome.com/2004/material/english/12-Geometry%20GiD%20format.pdf

Best regards

Enrique Escolano
