[GiDlist] Memory Bug in GiD 9.2.3?

Post by Martin.Meiler »

Hi GiD-developers,

i realized a strange behaviour of GiD during the last weekend.

Our FEM-Tool NACS generated a binary result file with a file size of 662 MB.

This file contains the modell (~ 800.000 elements, 1.000.000 nodes) as
well as simulation results of an eigenfrequency analysis with mechanical
displacements for 40 eigenfrequencies.

I started GiD with software rendering, went to PostProcessing mode and
opened the file. Then i selected contour fill - mechDisplacement as
well as the visualization of the deformed structure.

At that time GiD requested 3.7 GB memory.

Now i used the animate function to generate a pictures of each result.
GiD finally requested 34 GB on our compute server with 32 GB and
therefore terminated the machine.

The question is why is GiD requesting more and more memory for each
result step?

Best regards

Martin

[GiDlist] Memory Bug in GiD 9.2.3?

Post by miguel »

Hello,

GiD uses display lists, under some limitations, to show the visualization in
postprocess. As your model is quite big, gid should not use this option.
My guess is that, for some reason, it still uses this option.

You can deactivate this option by setting the variable from the right menu
'Utilities--Variables--OGL_useMeshObjects' to '0'.

Does it reduce the memory footprint of GiD? If not, can you send us the
example o let it in a location, for instance www.yousendit.com, from where
we can download it and check the problem?

Thanks,

Miguel Pasenau

[GiDlist] How to generate volume mesh out of surface mesh

Post by Hao Chen »

Dear all:

I want to generate tetrahetron mesh of a cubic volume.
Now, I have 3 surface triangle meshes of the cubic. Basing on these meshes, I want to generate volume mesh without changing these 3 facets' mesh.
How can I realize it?

Best regards.
Chen Hao.

[GiDlist] Mac OSX: Assign conditions crash the application

Post by Jesus F Gracia »

Hi:This is a very weird bug I found recently, because I was using this utility without any problems and suddenly start happening. I've tested in another machine with different configurations and the results are the same. I though it was something related to my own customized problem type but I use an example problem type (cmas2d) and the problem continues. I also try to reinstall GiD by deleting the application bundle from Applications and also ~/.gidDefaults and then run the installation package again... no luck :S
I guess some recent system update cause a conflict with GiD :S

-Open an existing GiD file or star a new one creating a Geometry and selecting a problem type.-Open the condition window, select any condition and push Assign button.-GiD Crashes!!
I'm attaching the apple report for this particular crash.

[GiDlist] How to generate volume mesh out of surface mesh

Post by abelcs »

Dear Chen,

If you want to generate a volume mesh using GiD, you must be in one of these
two situations:

- topological closed set of surfaces. In this case, you can create the
volume (Geometry-Create-Volume) and generate the mesh (Mesh-Generate).

- a conformal mesh which close a volume (each edge have HigherEntity==2). In
this case, you can generate the volume mesh selecting
(Mesh-MeshFromBoundary), and selecting all the triangles closing the
volume. This option is only available from the Right Buttons (you can set
them by clicking 'Utilities-Tools-Toolbars').

If I have understood well, you are not in one of these cases, so you will
have to do some work to reach one of these situations.

Kind regards,

ABEL
