[GiDlist] Main window

Post by Tontavanich, Bituporn »

Hi GiD,

When opening windows of, for example, some programs overlapping with GiD window, GiD main window shows pictures of other windows. As a result I need to click on "Zoom frame" to re-attain my model on GiD main window. I need to do this every time after activating GiD program.

Below are details of GiD on my computer and example of the problem.

Thank you.

[GiDlist] How to generate a grid without adding new nodes?

Post by Jonas Cordazzo »

Some time ago I sent a message asking how to generate a grid composed by triangles employing only the original nodes belonging to the original surface, no matter if the shape of resulting triangles be not so good. I was dealing with a problem that was not possible to create additional (new) nodes to the domain.

At that moment Abel C. Sans gave me his suggestions as you can see below.

However, GiD is always creating new nodes even following his suggestion.

My test case is a simple quadrilateral, defined as follows:

(-73.9225 ; 40.7604 ; 0) (-73.9217 ; 40.7601 ; 0)

(-73.9246 ; 40.7581 ; 0) (-73.9237 ; 40.7577 ; 0)

that is supposed to originate only 2 triangles. However, it is not happening.

Perhaps should I do anything else?

Anyway, thank Abel for your initial suggestions.

Kind regards,

Jonas

Dear Jonas,

The only way to generate a mesh without adding extra nodes is to force to mesh with a size bigger than the surface size. You should set all the lines as structured (with one division), and set a very big mesh size when you selecte 'Mesh-Generate'. You should also have to set the 'Automatic correct Sizes' to NULL (in Utilities-Preferences-Meshing).

Regards,

ABEL

[GiDlist] How to generate a grid without adding new nodes?

Post by abelcs »

Dear Jonas,

Depending on the shape of the surface to be meshed, some node is added or
not, when a unstructured mesher is used.

In your case, you have a four-sided surface, so you can generate a
structured mesh on it. If you set a structured the surface, you assign
"Triangle" as its element type, and you uncheck the "Symmetrical
structured-triangles" option in the Meshing Preferences window, you will
obtain a mesh with two triangles, and only using the corner points of your
surface as nodes.

Regards,

ABEL

[GiDlist] Main window

Post by escolano »

This is a problem related to your graphic card/driver and the OpenGL hardware acceleration
If you disable this acceleration the problem will be avoided

Go to Windows Screen properties-Advanced options-Solve problems
and decrease the acceleration level (use the bigger level that not produce any graphical problem)

Post by escolano »

¿how have you turned off the acceleration?
¿from the related Windows screen properties or starting "GiD safe mode" and selecting the software option? try both methods

Your details of GiD on your computer (Help-About- more) were showing that do you have the hardware acceleration activated, using the ATI drivers!!

You can also try our 9.1.1b beta version, we did a lot of changes on our "togl widget", maybe they will solve your case.

[GiDlist] Main window

Post by Tontavanich, Bituporn »

I turned it off by going to Display PropertiesSettingsAdvancedTroubleshootHardware Acceleration. How do I start GiD in safe mode, could you specify more details? I did try 9.1.1b as well but it is worse. That is I cannot even resume to my model by clicking on "Zoom Frame" as I did to 9.0.2.

Thank you.

No, the problem still exists even I turned off the hardware acceleration. I updated my display driver but it doesn't help either.

Abel C. Sans gently gave me his suggestions, in two emails, as you can see below.

However, GiD is always creating new nodes even following his suggestion.
My test case is a simple quadrilateral, defined as follows:

-73.9225,40.7604,0 -73.9217,40.7601,0
-73.9246,40.7581,0 -73.9237,40.7577,0

that is supposed to originate only 2 triangles. However, it is not happening. Really I don't believe that it is not possible to perform this simple task in GiD, perhaps I am still missing something.

Perhaps should I do anything else?

Anyway, thank Abel for your initial suggestions.

Kind regards,
Jonas

Ps.: Depending on 'Unstructured size transitions' on Meshing Preferences window, a grid with either 5 or 6 nodes is produced (I was expecting only 4!).

Dear
Jonas,

Depending on the shape of the surface to be meshed, some node is
added or not, when a unstructured mesher is used.

In your
case, you have a four-sided surface, so you can generate a structured mesh on
it. If you set a structured the surface, you assign "Triangle" as its element
type, and you uncheck the "Symmetrical structured-triangles" option in the
Meshing Preferences window, you will obtain a mesh with two triangles, and only
using the corner points of your surface as nodes.

Regards,

ABEL

Dear
Jonas,

The only way to generate
a mesh without adding extra nodes is to force to mesh with a size bigger than
the surface size. You should set all the lines as structured (with one
division), and set a very big mesh size when you selecte 'Mesh-Generate'.
You should also have to set the 'Automatic correct Sizes' to NULL (in
Utilities-Preferences-Meshing).

Regards,

ABEL
