[GiDlist] Meshing Quadrilateral Nodes

Post by Farzam, Arash »

Hi,

I have an example consisting of an L shaped 2d slab with quadrilateral
elements and a 3d mass underneath it with hexahedran elements. How can I
mesh the quadrilateral elements to have the exact x and z coordinates as
the quadrilateral elements underneath it? I am copying my example. When I
try, either the top slab does not mesh on the same coordinates or it turns
to other element.

Thanks,
Arash Farzam

[GiDlist] Meshing Quadrilateral Nodes

Post by escolano »

Instead of use 'cartesian mesher' (that can't mix hexas and quads) must use
the normal mesher, creating an structured mesh,

But in order to achieve what you want must subdivide your geometry in
six-sided volumes (in your simple shape it is easy)

To have structured hexas use

Mesh-Structured volumes-Assign-Size

(I have selected all volumes, and set to all its lines an 'approximated
size=1.0' (this implicitly set the integer number of divisions to have a
size close to 1.0)

And specify that do you want hexas (default is tetras) with Mesh-Element
type-Hexahedra (and select all volumes)

To have also the quadrilaterals in the 'L' surfaces could set 'Mesh
criteria-Mesh-Surfaces' and select this surfaces.

I attach my model (it is rotated related to your model, to facilitate the
creation en entities in the XY plane, you can rotate it now to set the
position you want with Utilities-Move.)

The L surfaces are shared by the volume, then the quads share the same nodes
as the hexas.

If do you want that the quads have its own nodes must modify the geometry:
copy the L surfaces (duplicating entities) and not set 'Mesh
criteria-Mesh-Surfaces' to the volume surface (Mesh-Mesh
criteria-Default mesh-Surfaces to restore to the default behavior)

This is an image of my model, splitted in volumes of 6-faces able to be
meshed structuredly

Enrique

Hi,

Thank you very much. I created two adjacent rectangle slabs instead of one
L shaped slab. Meshing was ok, but the two slab parts are tilted from the
cut line. How can I divide the surface for mesh that it will not assume
they are two separate parts?

Thanks,
Arash

[GiDlist] Meshing Quadrilateral Nodes

Post by escolano »

Sorry, I don't understand well what do you want.

If do you have a single line shared by both neighbor surfaces, then the
node's lines will be also shared between elements (will be like a single
part, not two separated parts)

If do you have two different lines, one by surface, then will be two
separated parts.

Enrique
