This bug are corrected in the last beta version of GiD (gid6.1.3b).

The import of parasolid files in Gid 6.1.2 make some problems with certain part. Me joined files in question. The file part1.x_t is correct, on the other hand the file part6.x_t is not correct for the hole. I also have other part problems aveses that have a hole.
Do you have an explanation?  
These files are generated with the CAD software solid edge origin that exports files parasolids in version 11. They don't present a shortcoming with the ParaHOOPS viewer 3D Part Viewer that reread files parasolids.

I wrote about making the frecuency analisys in GID.

But I want to know if it's possible to plot one mode of vibration. I want 
to know if it's possible to animate the results that I pass to

   Hello,

   You can try with this problemtype:

        ftp://gid.cimne.upc.es/pub/ramsan/cosmos-shell.gid.zip

   It permmits to define a shell model in GiD and export it for cosmos. Check 
also that inside the .gid directory, there is a file called cosmos2gid.c that 
can be compiled and that produces and executable that can be used to transfer 
results from cosmos to the GiD postprocessing part.

   You can modify the problemtype in order to adapt it to your needs.

I have download the version 6.1.3b of Gid, and the import of files parasolid happens well. Him there to a file that gives the message:
Warning: Node EDGE_s,Index=26. NULL points and not TRIMMED_CURVE or closed. 
While doing control utilities/repair, the part is repaired. I join the file of this piece for your information.

To generate tetrahedra mesh, first a volume must be created  whith the
boundary surfaces.

If the mesh generation fail, you can send the IGES file to
escolano at cimne.upc.es to check it.

Dear Pablo,

In COSMOS/M Geostar you don´t see anything when plotting elements because the mesh is not associated to geometry, the information you can import from GiD is only nodes & elements, not the geometry (Curves, Surfaces, etc..). 

You can display mesh simply issuing the following commands: 

. "BOUNDARY,1,0" command from "Display, Display_Option, Set Bound Plot" to plot boundary element faces only not associated with a surface or region
. "EVAL_BOUND,1,0,20,1" command from "Display > Display_Option > Eval Element Bound" to evaluate boundary faces, 
. "SHADE;" command to activate shading of element plots, and finaly
. "EPLOT;" command to plot ALL elements.

Dear Pablo,

In general in GEOSTAR you can plot "faster" shaded Shell elements mesh without geometry associated, but the hidden line algorithm is not always successful in plotting the elements correctly, especially for 3D solid models (Bricks & Tetras), so different techniques can be used to correct the displays.  

Yesterday I explained "to remove geometry association" of the elements during the plotting process, but also the z-buffer algorithm (Display > Display_Option > Set Hide Option) will usually do the trick of correcting the hidden line plot.  The z-buffer algorithm is more robust but is much more CPU intensive and can take relatively long times for display especially for large models. 

The z-buffer algorithm along with the removal of geometry will always solve any plotting problems for 3D solid elements !!

Is it possible to mesh a volume (with thethra) in GID having defined
previously the mesh in some of it faces (a 2D tri mesh)??

Is it possible to visualize, or to know in some way, the local axes of each mesh element (for example for hexahedra elements) directly in gid?

I notice that GID software has features "rotation" and
"translation", separately in the copy function. If one
wants to combine these 2 features simultaneously in
the copy function to create a helical object, what are
the steps to be taken? I am a bit surprised for not
seeing such useful feature in GID. But of course, I
might missed it somewhere in the program!

This is an interesting feature, but at this moment in the Copy tool cannot
be combined a translation and a rotation simultaneously .  We will study the
possibility of including it in a future version.

results, such as stress and strain tensor, Si, Sii and Siii. Are they same
as the max and min principle stresses or not? If not, could you please tell
me the calculation method of them? Actually I would like to express my
calculation results in the form of principle stresses as vectors. How can I
do that?

Hi Yingyongrattanakul,

when GiD reads a 'Matrix' or a 'Plain deformation matrix' results it calculates
internally the eigen values and vectors of these matrices.

If the matrix is a tensor matrix then these eigen values and vectors are
the main stresses: Si, Sii and Sii corresponds to the Sigma 1, Sigma 2 and
Sigma 3 values of the main stresses; and the vectors shows their direction.

In the stress vector representation, you can choose between the visualization of only
one of the main stresses: Si, Sii or Siii or all of them together. 
Blue stands for compression, also drawn like this >-----< and
red stands for tension, also drawn like this <----->.

If you want to give your own main stresses to GiD, there is the
'Main stresses' result type.
Here the eigen values and vectors must be provided to GiD, for stresses it will be
Si, Sii, Siii, Vector Si: x, y, z, Vector Sii: x, y, z, and Vector Siii: x, y, z.
Note that you can use this result type to show any three vector combination you need,
it does not necessarily be main stresses.

You can find information about the format of this result type under the
item 'File ProjectName.flavia.res' of the section 'POSTPROCESS DATA FILES'.

The mesh collapse utility is mainly created to join nodes and elements
located practically in the same position, not to simplify a mesh.
The user only can select the import tolerance (maximun distance to join two
nodes)

Note: In the last beta version of GiD 6.1.4b, the program is enhanced, it
tries to maintain preferredly the contour nodes.

After collapse mesh, the nodes are renumbered to fill holes in the
numeration (required for some analysis program), and then it is difficult to
know as it is the original node.

You can separate the nodes in layers to try to identify after the collapse.

Select a ImportTolerance minor who the side of smaller element to not delete
elements.

Actually, GiD cannot list the entities deleted in the collapse (and the
renumber it would make difficult it).

If I have understood your question, you are asking about the generation of a
surface mesh.
If yes, you have just to indicate 'no mesh' for the volumes and 'mesh' for
the surfaces.

Yes I found it. But I need the meshless feature for preprozessing. There is
a newer analysis methode than the finite elements methode called 'mesh free
methode' and for which the solver only needs points and a influence zone of
these points - not a node-elment-mesh.
This, I think, isnt supported by GID, or?

To generate points, first you have to create the volume in the usual way.
Then, select the item 'Only points' in the sub-menu 'Element type' in the 
'Meshing' top menu. Materials and conditions applied to the geometry will be
transfered to the mesh, as usual.

I have a problem with the new version (6.1.2) of GiD that I did not
experience
with v.5. That is:

When generating a 3D mesh consisting of a box enclosing a wing that is
attached to one of its side, I want to create border graphs of the wing
sections.

In v.5, I would generate some sections cuts, then I was able to select
the
wing section only, and not the square (that was generated by cutting the
wing
and the box enclosing it) that is part of the cut.

In v.6.1.2, it seems that it is impossible to separate the wing section
from
the rest of the cut for the purpose of a border graph.

Can you help?

Are there any particular examples using contact. I'm trying to run a dynamic finite element job using Gid and would like to use the software to determine the master and slave contact segments during pre-processing. Is gid capable of doing this?? If so how is this done?? Is this included in any tutorials or manuals??

I'm having difficulties importing results to GID (Version 6.1.2). 
I do the calculations outside GID, in my own thin-shell routine.
I can import the mesh with no problem, but when importing the results using
the format found on the reference manual, GID doesn't recognizes the phrase
(in the project.flavia.res file):

Result "xxxx" "zzzz" 1 Vector OnGausspoints etc.

By skipping that phrase, I managed to overcome this and already can
represent and visualize the displacements on the nodes, but can't import the
stress's, that are calculated in the center of the elements. I need to
"tell" GID that the results are in a Gauss Point in the center of the
element. It accepts the definition off the gauss point set, but doesn't
assign the results to that set, because it doesn't reads this phrase.
There are also some minor bugs, but in this moment, this is the really
important part.
Really looking forward into buying the software. Already altered the output
of some programs to GID format (quite easy to do), but now it doesn't read
the stresses, witch are fundamental!!!

? This header tells GiD to use the new results format.

In this header

After this word 'OnGaussPoints' have you entered the Gauss Points name?

I had already downloaded the reference manual and the user's guide and tried
to follow the examples but with no success. 
I'll send you a small example I've been using to try to understand what I'm
doing wrong (p.flavia.res and p.flavia.msh). 

I'm also sending a set of files that have what I'm really working on. The
first set (deslocamentos.flavia.res and deslocamentos.flavia.msh) have the
mesh of a very simple dam and the displacements given on the nodes. I can
import it with no problems in the format it's now using OPEN in the
POSTPROCESS.
The other set is the same mesh (jusante.flavia.msh) and the
jusante.flavia.res file that contains the Sxx, Syy and Sxy stress's in the
centre off the element. I can't visualize this in GID, as it doesn't
recognizes some of the instruction lines in the .res file that should tell
GID to read these values in a Gauss Point in the centre off the element.
I've separated these results (deslocamentos and jusante) that refer to the
same mesh in order to try to keep it simpler.

The mistake is probably something obvious and simple but I've looked at it
for so much time that I think I'm in a "no exit street"!!!

Hi!

Received your files, but can't open/import the results.
I'll describe what I do:
1 - 	open GID (version 6.1.2)

2 - 	clik on POSTPROCESS

3 - 	go to FILES menu and click on OPEN

4 - 	select the file mesa.res or mesa.msh that are (alone) in directory
"mesa"

5 - 	I get a "info window" saying: "EOF too early: in this line: 2 - Reading
Results."
	I close the window and can see the geometry of the table, but can't see any
results. The VIEW RESULTS window in the 	WINDOWS menu is all blank.

I tried reinstalling GID from the file I had but also with no sucess.
I'm sending the files I tried to send you last friday.

Hi All
I need some clarification about the local node
numbering for 20 noded brick element connectivity.
As I see, the  gid  first list the conner nodes and
then the intermediate nodes of each side.Thats fine.
But the problem is it lists the nodes in the clockwise
sense whereas I want it in the anti clockwise sense.
(This change in direction of connectivity gives me
large errors)Is there any way I can ask the GID to
list the connectivity in anti clock wise sense.
(ie:starting from a node and proceding in the
anticlockwise direction

Iwould appreciate if some one can give me some insight
in to this problem.

in 3D not exist the concept of "clockwise sense"
The GiD numeration for the 20 nodes hexaedral is:

if the first face is the : 1-2-3-4, your normal vector is (1-2)X(2-3) (point
to interior)
then the opposite face  5-6-7-8 is located following this normal direction.

the 9 to 20 nodes are located in the middle of edges.

Note:
Comand *GlobalNodes can have as arguments: invert, swap and swapinvert
you can play with them.

If the default order of GiD does not fit your needs, also, it is possible to
use the command in this way:
        *GlobalNodes(2)
And it will return the second node of the element.

A possibility is to modify the FORTRAN program to read the parameters of the
command line.
For example (using Digital Visual FORTRAN as compiler)

      PROGRAM Test
      USE MSFLIB
      CHARACTER*1024 INPUT,OUTPUT
      INTEGER*2 IARG,STAT
      IARG=1
      CALL GETARG(IARG,INPUT,STAT)
      IARG=2
      CALL GETARG(IARG,OUTPUT,STAT)

Then running the program obtain:

Another possibility is to redirect the console input from a temporary file:

    i have just downloaded the academic version for NT and have installed it, but i get odd pixelations covering the viewing window which goes when i load up a model, but when i then rotate or pan this model old images do not clear and i end up with a mess. Any ideas?

Tipically, these type of problems are caused by the graphics acceleration card. Search in the web page of
your card if there are actualized drivers.

Another possibility is the following:
Try to start GiD safe mode (from the start menu) and activate use Software OpenGL

If the problem persists, try to deactivate the graphic hardware acceleration
(Screen properties->Advanced options).
Also try a different colour resollution (select 32 bits of colour for example)

The problem type problem_type_solid2 from the GiD distribution is only a
sample of configuration files.
The analysis program (called from problem_type_solid2.bat ) is not included.
If you search a finite element program to solve structural problems of
beams, shells and 3D solids,  look at this web page:

This program works on Windows or Linux, and GiD version 6 or more is also
required.

The only idea I had to renumber the nodes and elements is to do a program
that get the data in the text file exported by GID, renumber in my way,
calculate, and then, in the program, restore the results in the original
form, this is a little complicated and is not general tool.

I want to now if exist or will exist a way in the gid to do that, and if
exist which are all the option.

Is it possible to alter the sense of the element connectivites within Gid??

I running some contact problems and hence need the surface element connectivities for the contact input. The output which Gid is giving is opposite to the direction I require. 

Can this be altered within a "*Set Cond" statement where i am looping over the face elements using "*GlobalNodes" for the surface connectivities??

Obviously, I could alter the format in the FE code, but i would like keep the code in its original format.

with the options:
Entities type: Volumes (3D models)or Surfaces (2D models)
Translation: Scale
and you have to indicate a point (reference center to scale ) and scale
factor.

You can use also the 'Copy':
Utilities - Copy
and you will conserve the original model. In this case it is useful to
create an auxiliar layer.

Only are visualized in colors the entities that they have assigned the condition in use when is selected Draw->Colors or Draw-> Field's color.
It is possible that it has selected a condition that is not applied to any entity.

NOTE 1:
In the mesh, if the condition applied to geometry is transformed into a condition on nodes, then are not visualized in colour at least you force a redraw.

NOTE 2:
If pick the button Entities, must be show the list of entities and your values for this condition.

   Hello,

   In an hexa element is not easy of talking about clockwise sense
because this is a convention only valid for a plane. In 3D, it is
better of talking about the right hand rule. For this element, the
criteria is:

  The normal of the face 1-2-3-4, using the right hand rule, will point
towards the interior of the element. The normal of the face 5-6-7-8 will
point towards outside the element.

  Also, check the following:

  Command: *ElemsConec can have as argument: swap
  Command: *GlobalNodes can have as arguments: invert swap swapinvert

  Also, All these commands can have an additional argument that is the
number
of order of the node.
  For example, to print the 3th node of one element use:

       *ElemsConec(3)

1- In the Monochrome mode, the displacement vector shows in green color
which makes it difficult to print clearly. Is there any way to change the
color to black so that the arrows are printable.

I've created the initial mesh in gid format for the post processor to read, under the name "filename.flavia.msh". This file reads in the number of initial elements for the problem. If during the analysis some elements are deleted is it possible to update the number of elements as the analysis is running? Within the file named "filename.flavia.res".

Yes, during the analysis you can completely modify your mesh. Indeed, in
this case you are forced to write the new element conectivities and node
numbers in the 'filename.flavia.msh', as well as use the new node list in
the 'filename.flavia.res'.
On the other hand, if you don't modify your mesh during the analysis, only
the 'filename.flavia.res' has to be created.

  I'm sorry but i did not understand your initial e-mail with the following problems: 

  1. If only 'filename.flavia.res'  is used in the post-processor an error is returned asking for the *msh or *bon files.

  2. Whilst updating the *.msh file during the analysis, do you overwrite the file during each output? And then output the *.res file straight afterwardws? Or do you contiuue adding to the *msh as the output is required.

  3. Do you possess any examples on the Gid site showing how an erosion problem is dealt with?? I've looked but couldn't find anything.

In GiD postprocess, actually the mesh is the same in all time steps.

In order to simulate the element erosion:

The analysis must create two files for result step: filestepi.flavia.msh  and filestepi.flavia.res.
and then load in postprocess each result to visualize separatelly.

Another possibility is assign a too big value to nodes/elements to ignore in a result step, and then 
visualize a resul, setting the upper limit with the maximun real value.

GiD has not thought to create linear and quadratic elements simultaneously,
but indirectly can be generated. For example:

- Activates the MaintainOldMesh variable (Utilies Variable MaintainOldMesh
1) so that it is asked the user if the existing mesh is deleted when
remeshing.
- Generate one of the two meshes, for example the quadratic hexahedra.
- Set  the volume to not generate mesh (MeshCriteria->NoMesh->Volumes)
- Set  Meshing->QuadraticElements to Normal way.
- Mesh now the lines without destroying the hexahedral. (Cancelling old
mesh?  Not).

The example explained in the .pdf reference manual
works for GiD versions after 6.1.4b. If you are
using an earlier version (6.1.2), you should try the
examples of the reference manual (.html) which
accompanied your GiD 6.1.2.

I attach these examples: example.flavia.res and
example.flavia.msh. Open them from the GiD
postprocess.

I'm new to GID and am trying to walk every tutorial. I passed ok the two ones on meshing and pre-processing, and follow the post-processing up to the point of trying to generate iso-surfaces (in both exact and automatic modes), when the program invariably crashes. I'm selecting the option from the "VIew Results" menu, and all the remaining options seem to work ok.

I have installed ver 6.1.2 with the one month optional psw, and Calsef 5.5 also with the temporary allowance.

hello again;
anybody can explain to me or send me a tutorial to CREATE CONTACT betwen
volumes, i consulted the help, but i did not understand very well.
i suppose, when there is a contact between two bodies, i select surface
in contact (these are in the same plane), and then when i mesh GID
creates elements gaps, but i did not get it.
when i select the surfaces Gid say me "0 new contacts"

To create a volume contact, the user must select two equal surfaces, physically located at the same position.
(or using  Separated volume, can be separated by a displacement/rotation)

Then these two surfaces are meshed with a one-to-one relationship between nodes, and are created degenerated contact elements connecting the nodes. (if it is possible more than one transformation between surfaces, the user is
asked to select pairs of analogous points).

In conclusion, the creation of contact-surfaces or volumes can be considered like a mesh generation option of GiD.

If your program cannot require this one-to-one relation of nodes, you can use a condition to mark the contact nodes or elements.

One of the possibilities to do it is with the "Mesh Read" command:
"With this option it is possible to read a mesh in order to visualize it
within GiD.
It is also possible to read a new mesh and add it to the existent one. In
this case,
the user is prompted to keep the former one or join it to the new mesh."
So, you can create a mesh, save it and start a new project where you can
generate the other elements and add the old mesh.

   Make a circle and then use:

    Utilities->Move->Scale and use different factors for the X and Y axes.

   Another possibility is the intersection between a sphere and a plane.

    GiD buit in contacts are defined for a couple of situations:

    - Normal contacts: Two boudaries (2D or 3D) that share the same
geometric
      position but the geometrical entities are doubled.
    - Separate volume: Two boundaries (in 3D) that are geometrically
separated
      but you can go from one to another with a solid rigid movement.

    Other types of contacts are typically defined using two conditions, one
for the master and the other one for the slave. Both conditions must have a
field that acts as an identifier, and the the user will assign the same
identifier
for every pair of master slaves. Later, in the .bas file it is possible to
list both groups of contact elements.

Hello everybody,
I've got some troubles using the Nastran problem types : I define geometry, 
meshing, materials, conditions and problem data but when I clic on calculate, 
there is always the same error : in the warning window, "Error executing 
'/.../problemtypes/nastran_plane.gid/nastran_plane.bat /.../file.gid 
/.../problemtypes/nastran_plane.gid'" and in the info windows, "Problem with 
calculate program Erreur de format pour exec() check script file.2".
Can anybody tell me if I do something wrong or if I have some software 
installation troubles?

    Hello,

    You cannot calculate directly with Nastran from GiD. Instead,
you must use:
     Files->Export->Write calculation file

    and you will obtain the input data file for NASTRAN.

I tried it but it doesnt seem to work : the snapshot joined shows a trimmed 
surface not realy nice. I think there is a "contour line" approched by a 
nurbs line. So surfaces are trimed whichever import option I unselect.

The option "Collapse after import" try to join coindident points, and trim lines try to divide and join lines coincidents in part.

But this collapse is not related to the concept of trimmed surface. A trimmed surface is a portion of a surface, determined by curves that trim a base surface.
A trimmed surface in the IGES file will always create a trimmed surface in GiD.

Note: the image snapshot.tif is not readable, possibly the file it is corrupt.
Without an example of the problem it is impossible to known it.

I'm starting to understand GiD but i need a working manual for this:-)
The tar.gz package of the linux postscript manual seems to have buggy files in it. In particular the chapter1 and chapter2 file don't want to open nor with gvnor with acroread. If i try to convert them in pdf with 'ps2pdf' I get the sameerror:

tip and the top surface (a sliding surface with friction) in the 
parametrization of the physical problem.

    Moreover, I have only been able to create triangular meshes.  Is it 
possible to create horizontally aligned rectangular meshes representing the 
various layers of the material (the implanted amorphous layer and the 
substrate) ?  If so, how ?

     Finally, I would like to know if it is possible to create a 
stress-strain curve to define a material or better, to obtain a 
load-displacement curve for the simulation that could be compared to the 
experimental curve in order to adjust the values of the parameters to 
modelize (in this case, E and Y).

To create a surface polygonal of n sides, is entered the radius 
of the circunscrite circunference. 
For example, if yor enter a 4 sided polygon, centered at the origin, with radius=10 then obtain:

You can also create a square, for example, creating the base line with size=10 and then extrude 
this line by translation to create the surface. (see Utilities->Copy).

When apply a zoom or pan, the figure not change of position, only change the user view point.
Note: You can check the coordinates of a point with Utilities->Id.

The materials are loaded selecting firts a problem type.
To create a new material, you can derive it from another previous material (used of template for the fields),
and then fill the value of the fields modulus_(E)=2.1E6, etc.
Then this new material can be assigned to geometry or mesh entities (best assign only on geometry, meshing, the material are automatically assigned to mesh entities).

The initial stress, etc can be defined with a material or a condition (creating an appropiate problem type). 
GiD unknown the significate of the fields of materials or conditions, only apply this over the mesh, and write a
input file for the external analysis program (Tochnog).

It is also available generate structrured meshes of cuadrilateral and hexahedral elements.

To define a to stress-strain curve material, you can use grid field in the material (variable number or rows). 
and define this curve by points in tho columns.

a problem in the problem customization.
I don't know how to modify the unit field as indicated in the GiD manual 
for the special fields.
If I only introduce the string #UNITS# after the property_name and the 
unit, i.e. (in the file problem_name.mat)

QUESTION: Young's_modulus_E:#UNITS#
VALUE: 2.1e11Pa

and then I set the problem data

Data->Problem type->problem_name

the GiD crashes (I specify that without the unit, i.e. in the usual form

The option File->Export->FEMAP is available in  MSC/Nastran for Windows. I'
unknown if it is available in other Nastran distributions.

Hello everybody,

I just downloaded the tochnog problemtype a couple of minutes ago.
after creating a surface i found that, when assigning materials, the
material name was 'GROUP1', 'GROUP2', . . . Mmm, curious . . .
The only property of these materials were the 'group type' entries.
Very stange, mmmmmmm
For conditions, the situation was almost the same.
Looking into the definition of conditions 'tochnog.cnd' and 'tochnod.mat'
does not clarify the situation.

After looking into Tochnog's website, in the same 'download' section were 
i downloaded tochnog, i found an entry:

"· If you want to print the Tochnog-GID manual or view it with a postscript viewer, download a postscript Tochnog-GID manual
      file . The A4 format for Unix Tochnog-GID postscript manual file is tngid.ps.gz. The letter format for Unix Tochnog-GID
      postscript manual file is tngidletter.ps.gz (suited for US postscript printing). The A4 format for Microsoft Windows
      Tochnog-GID postscript manual file is tngidps.zip. The letter format for Microsoft Windows Tochnog-GID postscript

After downloading the poscript version, i see under the section 'Generate mesh from within GiD':

"
· Choose in GID 'data' then 'Project type'. Choose 'tochnog'.
· Generate geometris in GiD.
· Assign conditions. This will later be used to generate 'bounda_unknown' and 'bound_time' records for Tochnog.
· Assign materials. This will later be used to generate 'group_type' records and records for Tochnog.

So, after reading that, from the third and fourth point my conclusion is that Tochnog uses this 
'strange' properties encoding in materials and conditions to point to some internal, in Tochnog,
predefined Bound_Condition_groups and Material_groups with its right properties defined
( which were not told to GiD).
But i'm not a Tochnog user, so i don't know what 'group_type's, 'element_group's, etc., are.
If i were one, i would read carefully the Tochnog's manual.

More of a bit of reading, at the end of this section, i found:

" . . ., and the gid calculate wil not start a real calculation. You should finish the file with an editor
and then run tochnog in the usual way."

So, from this i guess that the problem type tochnog is not a 'ready-to-calculate' problem type, and that it needs a little
bit of work to accomplish this. GiD is used to prepare the geometry and mesh for tochnog.

I belive more information can be found inside Tochnog manual and its mailing list.
I'll be happy to see the tochnog problem type finished.

Exactly!!!
The problem type tochnog IS NOT a ready-to-calculate problem type. But 
tochnog users have to know that in conbination with GiD, preparing a data 
file for tochnog will be very much faster.
For the matter of materials, you create a group with the type "materi" and 
you assign it on all elements with the same material. Later, with a text 
editor, you add the material properties related to this group.
In fact, the boring work is to assign material to elements and tochnog 
problem type does this and only this.

I agree that you can't use this problem type like a "black box".In my 
opinion, it's a good way to understand exactly what you do.

I want to add that you can assign conditions very easily with the tochnog 
problem type by knowing how does tochnog data files works. You specify up to 
4 time values. If you don't want to use all values, keep the -1 values for 
timeX and it will be skipped during the calculation file generation.

He echo algunas modificaciones al Calsef, agregándole una nueva tipología
estructural y nuevos elementos finitos. Deseo insertar el módulo ampliado en
el GID, pero el ejecutable que genero no es compatible con la forma en que
exporta el GID los resultados a pesar de que he utilizado los fuentes
bajados de su sitio incorporando a ellos las modificaciones.

¿Qué necesito? Que me envíen los Problems Type del GID que se entiendan con

Supongo ya que habrás descargado el problem type "calsef_old.gid.zip" que
hay en la web de Calsef http://www.cimne.upc.es/calsef

Este problem type está un poco anticuado, y puede contener errores, pero
creo que puede servirte perfectamente con alguna ligera modificación
(especialmente si cambias algo el formato de entrada de tu versión de
Calsef).

Este problem type agrupa todas las tipologías contempladas en calsef (2D,
3D, etc.), En cambio en las nuevas versiones hemos separado cada tipologia
en un problem type distinto (también podrías optar por usar estos nuevos
problem type como base de partida).

Un problem type de GiD está compuesto por ficheros de texto, fácilmente
modificables según se explica en el tutorial

Hemos comprado recientemente la versión 6.0 de GID. Lo estamos usando
para postproceso y en todos nuestros modelos recibimos un mensaje de
error como el que está abajo indicado, cuando abrimos un archivo .res.
El programa parecer leer y representar sin problemas los datos nodales
almacenados hasta la línea donde da error, y el resto de nodos los deja
sin datos.
¿Podrían decirnos cual es el problema?

Cannot be defined directly in GiD a anisotropy direction for the mesh.
What if can become it is to define a mesh size in any point of the space, by means of a " background mesh ".  This makes possible the adaptive re-meshing, assigning the new size based on an error estimator of the solution in the previous mesh.

There is no special extension for batch files.

When activating this option, all the commands since GiD is started will be saved
into the given file name. 
Remember to copy or move the file before the next GiD session is started, or
you'll loose the file, as it is overwritten.

I want that GiD executes a problem in a directory where I save my file, but 
I cannot get it.

Suppose that I save a GiD database "wedge.gid" in a directory 
c:aldowedge, then GiD writes a directory "wedge.gid" here.
If I save also an input file (ctrl-x ctrl-c) for my solver as "wedge" in 
directory  c:aldowedge, I have this situation in the directory c:aldowedge:

The recommended location for a problem type is the directory problemtypes
(c:ProgrammiGidWinproblemtypesPROBLEM.gid)
The file c:ProgrammiGidWinproblemtypesPROBLEM.gidPROBLEM.bat for
example is:
%3myprogram %2\%1.dat

If the executable myprogram cannot accept the input file name "wedge.dat"
then rename it before:
for example from "wedge.dat" to "wedge"
rename %2\%1.dat %2\%1
%3myprogram %2\%1

    I'll try to clarify your question:

    Once the model is prepared, GiD offers basically two methods to deal
with the analysis.

   1.- if you use "Files -> ImportExport -> Write calculation file", GiD
       will write the analysis file to the location that you choose in the
       interactive browser. This way, the .bat file is not used and the
       analysis program must be executed manually by the user.

   2.- If you use 'Calculate->Calculate' GiD writes automatically the
       analysis file as MODEL.gidMODEL.dat and executes automatically
       the analysis program. The way to call the analysis program is defined
       in the MODEL.bat or MODEL.unix.bat or MODEL.win.bat files.

   If you want to create the .bat file (that defines the way to call the
analysis
program), you can access to the following parameters:

   1.- %1 (Name of the model without the path and the leading .gid)
       EXAMPLE: MODEL
   2.- %2 (Directory of the model)
       EXAMPLE: c:my projectswonderful GiDMODEL.gid
   3.- %3 (Problem type directory)

Hello,

I am trying to mesh the boundary surface of a 3D volume with 3 
parrallepipedic volume layers (see the .geo file attached).
I have mesh troubles (the generated mesh file is incorrect) if one 
dimension is very small comparatively to the two others. This problem 
appear when one volume layer is very thin (in z dimension) comparatively to 
the x and y dimensions. It appear also when the mesh dimension is very small.

Is this problem can be corrected ?

We have not detected any mesh problem.
Is attached your file, with 3 volumes created and meshed (the surfaces also mesh without problems).

Check the Meshing Preferences: 
Verify if AutomaticCorrectSizes is selected.
Try also Rfast mesher, and size transition factor aprox 0.6 - 0.7

If it continues giving problems, it says your GiD version (see Help->About), and all the meshing parameters (element size, and mesh preferences). Try also to update to the last beta version.

We have already corrected the error in Parasolid import of the files 
MANIFOLD1(11_0).X_T and MANIFOLD1(11_1).X_T.

The third file MANIFOLD1(12_0).X_T is written in Parasolid 12006 version format, 
and GiD 6.1.4b - 6.1.5b can only read until the 11004 version.

The bugs (and actualization to 12006 version) are corrected for the next GiD beta version.

We attach the file MANIFOLD1(11_0) and a volume mesh in GiD format

To create a probleme type, you must create a group of configuration files: *.prb,*.cnd,*.bas, etc.

We are trying to develop a problem type for BEASY which is a 
BEM code. The main problem appears to be defining the boundary 
conditions.

Generally the condition we need to apply is like a face pressure on 
an element. We wish to define the values of the pressure at each of 
the nodes on the element as they may be different.
For example for a three node triangle we want to define the 
pressure at each of the three nodes. Note we cannot apply it as a 
nodal condition as pressure has to act over an area therefore it only 
means something if applied over the surface of the element.
How do we define this in the cnd file?

Assuming we can do this successfully haw do we write the data 
using the bas file.?

We want to create a record for each element with the condition 
applied something like the following.

   It is always easier to learn how to define conditions and
the .bas file by analysing a similar example.

   You should check the example problemtypes that come with
the GiD distribution in the subdirectory: problemtypes

   Search for conditions like: 'Surface-load' or something
similar.

     Note that the old postprocess format requires 15 characters as the
description name. So, in this case the number 1 must begin at column 16.

    By the way, if possible, it is better to use the new postprocess format
that have a new and better way to define the headers of the results.

    You can check this new format in the GiD help.

Here is a way of meshing a sphere with quadrilateral elements. It uses a 
partition of the sphere in six identical surfaces homeomorphous with a square.
Each surface is meshed with a structured mesh.
I join a postscript image of the mesh and an ascii format of the GiD files 
(just put sphere.* in a sphere.gid directory).

I am evaluating GID as a pre and post processing package for use with
 computational fluid dynamics.

The problem types that I expect to grid and analyze will require multi-blocks
 or several volumes in GID terminology.

I can not determine how GID numbers the elements.  For example, I would like to
 always create structured brick elements that are number first along the x axis
 and then the y axis for various z axis values.

I have been trying to determine what determines the order in GID, is it the
 ordering of the surfaces making up the volume, the order of the lines making
 up the surfaces, both, or none of the above.

I would very much appreciate some insight into the GID structured brick mesh
 numbering (and generating) scheme.

    Mesh numbering in GiD follows the next schema:

    - Node numbering is not related to the generation process because
      when the generation is finished, a simple renumbering algorithm
      is applied to the mesh. The objective is to decrease the storage
      for analysis matrixes using the Skyline or Band scheme.

    - Element numbering is NOT changed after generating the mesh and so,
      it follows the "natural" numbering than depends on the generation
      method. The structured generation method acts as follows:

      Take as first surface of the volume the first one that is listed
      when you use Utilities->List->Volumes.

      Take as second surface the one that shares the first line of surface
      1 (as can be seen in Utilities->List->Surface)

      Take as third surface the one that shares the third line of surface
      1 (as can be seen in Utilities->List->Surface)

    With these concepts and observing a simple example, you can discover
the element ordering.

   The idea is that GiD does NOT make a numbering of the elements relative
to a geometrical property, like follow the X,Y, or Z axes, because this is
a bad defined operation. Your test example probably has the surfaces
orthogonal
to the X,Y and Z axes, then it would work. Now, imagine a 45º rotation
around
any axe. How to define the ordering in this case?

   The conclusion is that a well defined analysis program should not be
based
in a concept that will be broken by any non trivial example.

   In any case, if you consider that this is a GiD lost feature, it would be
important that you defined the desired behaviour in this mailing list. Then,
the GiD development team could consider the future inclusion of this option
in the code.

Thank you again for responding to my request about how elements are
numbered.  I have taken a close look at your response.  Your instructions
are very clear and I now completely understand and can demonstrate with a
simple example your element numbering methodology.

I have a follow on question.

As I build multi-volume cfd structured hex meshes, I would also like to
pack elements into the boundary layer.  I have successfully used the
concentrated element feature in GID if I want to concentrate elements at
either the start or end of a line.  In CFD, I usually want to concentrate
elements at BOTH the start AND end of a line of a volume.

Will such a feature be available in future GID releases?

With the current GID release 6.1.5b that I am using on both a Windows and
Linux system, can I easily concentrate elements at both the start and end
of a line?
The only solution I can think of involves breaking up a single volume into
8 volumes to concentrate elements at +/- i, +/- j, and +/- k.

GiD version, to concentrate elements in both the beginning and the end. The
only workaround is the one that you have already described.

I understand how the numbering scheme is dependent on the surface order in
 defining the volume and the line order of surface 1.

How is the order of the lines determined as reported in
 Utilities->List->Surface?  I have discovered the line order is NOT the order
 that one defines the surface.

preprocess and calculate a project a warning appears
"unsetdrive g: Access is denied".
This occurs also when using the GID example
problemtypes supplied.

   Hello,

   This is a known problem in Windows 2000. This is more a Windows problem
than a GiD problem because Win2000 permits a normal user to create a virtual
drive but not to delete it. GiD new version will init the calculation in a
different way in order to avoid this problem.

   The workarounds are:

   - Give the user administrator privileges. In this case, everything works
     perfectly.
   - Continue working in the same way. The program will calculate correctly
     but a couple of virtual units (f: g: h: ...) will be left after
     every calculation. When Windows is closed and open again, these virtual
     units dissapear. It is also possible to delete them by hand.

Hi all,

I learned about GID yesterday on the Meshing Research Corner.
I am looking for a Hexahedra Meshing Generation Software to generate
an assemblage of eigth-node brick-like elements from a triangle mesh.

Later I will use this assemblage of brick-like elements as an input in

non-linear finite element model that I am developing to simulate soft
tissues.

I would like to do the following with this Hexahedra Meshing Generation
Software:

a) Import triangle mesh data possible using .OBJ format (Wavefront and
Maya format)
b) Generate the hexahedra data representation
c) Export hexahedra data representation in such a way that I can
represent
in my internal data structure

I know that .OBJ format is not supported by GID. I believe that I can
write
my own personalized format reader.

I saw some examples in the tutorials and in the manual about tetrahedral
meshes.
I will go over this documentation in the weekend to see if I can find
something
more specific regarding Hexahedra meshing.

At this point I have 2 questions:

1) Can I perform the steps a, b, and c described above with GID?
2) Is there any kind of limitation to perform the steps a, b, and c with
GID?

GiD only generates hexahedral in structured form (volumes with 6 faces).
They are not directly readed the mesh format of Wavefront or Maya, but it is
simple to translate them to the own mesh format of GiD.
GiD can be customized to export the mesh, materials and conditions in a user
defined format.

Think about the possibility of modifying your FEM code to work with
tetrahedral instead of hexahedral (the tetrahedral is much more flexible at
the time of defining a generic shape)

If the file "problemtype".cnd contain CANREPEAT: yes, then the user user can
assign one condition several times to the same entity, else a entity can
contain only a single condition (the last assigned overwrite another
existent)

for example: if the condition  Surface-Pressure is defined:

NUMBER: 1 CONDITION: Surface-Pressure
CONDTYPE: over surfaces
CONDMESHTYPE: over body elements
CANREPEAT: no
QUESTION: Pressure
VALUE: 0

then, a surface only can contain 1 condition named Surface-Pressure.

Not, GID cannot restrict the assignation of different conditions to an
entity.
The only way is to define a single type of condition in the *.cnd file of
the problem type.

Hi,

I am new to using tochnog.  I want to create a sphere and give a 
quadrilateral contact surface, and apply force from top...so that I can see 
the sphere getting compressed.

I created the sphere using GID and followed an example (Pressed rubber 
cylinder) to add force and geometry definitions.  Tochnog gives no error but 
postprocess using GID does not deform the sphere..the sphere moves from its 
original location.

sphere.dat is attached.

Any help will be appreciated.

I implemented an output useful for GiD from my FE code. Post process files 
are in the new format, and you find them in the attachments.

But GiD finds this error in my result file .flavia.res:

Found EOF too early: in this line: 108 - Reading Results.
[this message appears in a info window]

Line 108 is the last line of the file .flavia.res
Therefore, I cannot post my results clearly; I see also a long list when I 
select View Results -> Contour Fill, but this is not what I want.

I use GiD 6.1.2.

Can anyone help me?

Hi Aldo Gishi,

the new postprocess results format needs GiD version 6.1.4b or higher
( ftp://gid.cimne.upc.es/pub/gid_adds/Windows).

After taking a look into your es03b.flavia.res file, several points
must be clarified ( http://gid.cimne.upc.es/support/gid_16.html#SEC226):

· Result names should unique within the same step. 
  In your file results "Stress" and "Strains" are defined twice: once on nodes,
  and again for Gauss Points.

· If a result is defined OnGaussPoints, the Gauss Points name, where the result
  is defined, should be given.
  In your file the second results "Strains" and "Stress" are defined over Gauss Points
  without telling GiD which GaussPoints should be used: "Tria3_1_GP" or "Quad4_4_GP".

· The 'ResultRangesTable' and 'ComponentNames' are optional, but:

- If a 'ResultRangesTable' is specified inside a Result, this 'ResultRangesTable'
  must be defined before. 
  In your file, results should use the ResultRangesTable "ResultTable" but
  this table is not defined anywhere.

- 'ComponentsNames' should be separated with commas, but in your file, some of
  them are only separated by spaces. Although it may work now, it is not guaranteed
  that later works.

Hi,
I am trying to use GID as a preprocessor for a BEM
solver. 
I am using currently modifying the .sim file to
display labels for the conditions I apply to the
elements.
However, I was wondering if it is possible to modify
the way GID displays the element, for example, the
element would could change color, once a condition has
been applied.  
Is this possible?

It is not possible that an element changes permanently of color when a
condition has been applied to him.
What can become is to temporarily draw the conditions (by icon, by colors,
or by
the content of some field) pressing the "Draw" button of the conditions
window.

The GiD postprocess format is too easy to write.

You can see the format specification and a sample at
http://gid.cimne.upc.es/support/gid_16.htm

It is recommended to use the "new format" (GiD 6.0 or later  is required)
(the old postprocess format is also supported for back compatibility)

I' unknown if another user it has written a result translator from Fluent to
GiD.

Just one more remark: I NEED to have information about "surfaces"
included into
my mesh file. To do that I build a .mat file which includes my fake
materials to retrieve
"elm_mat" for both elements and faces. Then I instruct Gid to create the
mesh using the Mesh Criteria over
surfaces to have acces to the faces in "elems".

My problem is first that for triangles *nnode give me 4 instead of 3!

Second when I tried to see using gmsh my "getdp mesh" the volume is fine
but the surfaces are completly corrupted so I wonder if my *ElemsConec
is wrong for faces...

Third if I rerun the gid from a saved session I don't get the same
"elm_mat" for my faces?

Could you help me out? (May be I'm doing something wrong?)
I am using an eval version of Gid which expires after the 3rd october...

You can define a condition, for example BoundaryID, applied in geometry to surfaces, and transferred in the mesh to a face of 3D element.

is it possible to implement interface elements with GiD? I mean i.e. a 
linear element with 2 nodes at each extremum that are each one connected to 
the nodes of quadratic elements nearby.

Hello,

when meshing inside GiD, all the elements must be quadratic or not.
That is, you can not mix 2 node linear elements with quadratic elements 
( 3 node triangles or 4 node quadrilaterals).
But you can mix 3 node linear elements ( 2 nodes at the end of the line +
+ one in the middle) and quadratic elements ( 6 node triangles or 8/9 node
quadrilaterals). Or you can mix 2 node linear elements and non quadratic
elements ( 3 node triangles or 4 node quadrilaterals).
To achieve this, after selecting the element type you want for the surfaces,
you must be also tell GiD to mesh the lines: 
select 'Meshing->Mesh criteria->Mesh->Lines' in the menu bar and 
click over the lines from the geometry from which you want the line elements.

One way to get what you want is to mesh your model with elements ( 3 node lines
and 6 node triangles or 8/9 node quadrilaterals), and then
in your problem type ( .bas) transform each 3 node linear element into two
2 node lines.

Let me suggest you some tests to solve your problem:
1. If you have a filename.tcl in your problem_type subdirectory, delete or
rename it. This kind of file could change the default parameters for the
menu visualisation (and more).
2. Any changes in the configuration files should need to reload the problem
type, that is, in the menu:
Data  - Problem type - the_problem_type_of_your_interest
A dialog box will be open with the message:
"All data information(materials,conditions,data) will be lost. OK?"
And you should answer YES (Aceptar or equivalent).
Now, the conditions window should show the new changes, but you have also to
reassign the rest of conditions and data, including materials and,
therefore, you have to generate the mesh again.
3. The filename.cnd has some not allowed characters or strings (i.e., if you
include spaces in your QUESTION, tabulators, etc). In this case, you can
explore by yourself comparing it with existing files or send us the files.

Hi,

Working with *.bas file, I´m preparing the data input for an application. 
I wonder if is there a way to output to the same line of the *.dat file
several conditions (single fielded) of each selected node as it they were
fields of a same multifielded condition? (ie, as if using *cond).

I know it would be easy if they were fields on the same condition, but
conceptually they are not much alike, and I would prefer to treat them as
diferent conditions at preprocessing.

The procedure GidAddUserDataOptions is not already documented ( it will be ).
For now, you should know that it is usefull to modify the Data menu in the GiD
interface. Here is the heading of the tcl procedure.

What is the numbering order used by GiD for gauss points in standard
locations 
in 2D quadrilateral elements ?

To give some background, I am using a program called NONSAP which
outputs gauss point stresses only for most of its material models. It
uses this convention for a 4 node element with node order I-J-K-L:

          J            I

          |  2    4   |  1,2,3,4  are the 2x2 gauss point locations
          |           |
          |  1    3   |
          |           |

The above produced strange results on GiD.

Using the order below seemed to produce better results visualising on
GiD for a test problem:

          |  2    1   |  1,2,3,4  are the 2x2 gauss point locations

          |           |

So does GiD use this order, or is it something more complicated
altogether? Also how does GiD number the gauss points for a 3x3 scheme?
I can't find any info in the documentation on the number ordering issue.
Hopefully above diagrams are not messed up on transmission.

The Gauss Points order and local axis position for Triangle and 
Quadrilaterals are given on the page 185 of the GiD Reference Manual. On 
this page the order of a 3x3 scheme is also pictured. The file of the GiD

The "line-contact" (to create a union degenerated between two points) is not implemented in GiD, it is only implemented the "surface-contact ", and  the "volume-contact".

At this moment it is necessary to use another alternative, like for example:
- Create a line (of null length) between points, and assign some condition to him to distinguish it 
(Note: if "collapse" is used it destroys this line).
- Or create a condition with thwo fields: the number of the two nodes (The user must write the numbers manually, and if renumber or remesh this information remain obsolete).

In the future will be added the option "Line-Contact " directly inside GiD.

Basically I got two possible answers to create a kind of contact line.
But, I'm not sure yet about all three recommendations. Followings are
each answers from you and my additional question.
1. Create the null line using the two nodes which have the same geometric
location and allocate the condition to identify the null line. In this
case, how do I create the null line? And can I allocate the material on
the null line?

2. Create the master and slave nodes using condition. In this case, how do
I select the master and slave node from gid window since there are in same
geometric location? Do I need to use layer concept for this? Or can I
define those in *.cnd file? And Can I allocate the material to this even
though I don't have the physical element inside Gid. Could you please give
me more detailed information for this case?

I had the same problem and all I did is stretched the box a little bit to
see the magnification factor option.

Dear GiD list members,

How can I control the amplification factor of the deformed shape of my
model on the GiD Post-processor?

I am using the 6.1.2 version of GiD and the "Mesh Deformation" box which
appears on my example I don't have the same options on the box indicated at
the page 115 of the Reference Manual. Is it due to the used GiD version or
it requires some modifications on the ".flavia.res" file?

The line can be created simply selecting to the points writing its numeration (label). The labels can be visualized (see View->Label->All or Utilities->List->Lines/Points ).
An material or condition can be assigned over this line (pick in screen or enter line label)

Two equal surfaces  can be forced to generate the same mesh by means of a "
contact "
(see Geometry->Create->Contact->Separated volumes)
This create prismatic elements between the two surfaces.
You can create 3 contacts between opposite surfaces, and mesh the
parallelepiped volume.
After you must delete or ignore the prisma elements generated for the
contacts, and to consider only the tetrahedral.
You can separate in a layer the volume contacts to separate the prisms of
the tetrahedrals.

GiD cannot mesh prisms, only can created for volume contacts.
You can create two surfaces, and create a separated volume contact between
these surfaces.

then meshing creates prisms.
After, you can copy this prism elements to create more layers of prisms.

Note the conditions must be applied directly to the mesh,
and if you remesh the elements are deleted.

I' attach a file sampleprismas.batch with the orders to create a sample. You
can write each line in the command line manually, or read the batch file.
(It is created with GiD 6.1.2, some orders can have small changes for GiD
5).

I' attach also sampleprismas.zip, with the geometry and mesh in GiD format.

 I have been trying to learn using GID as a post processing
environment. I am interested in the `new' file format 
(*.falvia.res) only.  So as a start, I wanted to try out the 
example available in the online manual:

 1- Create the mesh file (*.falvia.msh) 
 2- Create the result file (*.falvia.res)
 3- Load up the mesh file in the 'Preprocess' mode
    using the (Files -->> Import -->> Mesh Read).
 4- Move to the 'Postprocess' mode. 
 5- Try to load up the result file using (Open):::=> 
    GiD complains about reaching the "EOF" in the
    second line...!?
 6- Assuming there is a problem in reading the blank lines,
    I changed the blank lines to comments lines:::=>
     Gid complains:

*.flavia.res -> the extension '.flavia.' is only used
inside a '*.gid' project to 'automatically' read the results
when passing from pre- to post-.

The new postprocess format can be read with GiD version 
6.1.4b or higher, available at:

under 'Download GiD beta versions', or at:

  ftp://gid.cimne.upc.es/pub/gid_adds/

I implemented a GiD model with two different types of 2D elements, 
triangles (one gauss point) and quadrilaterals (four GP).

Now, I'm trying to visualize the stresses and strains at gauss points in my 
example (see attachments), but in GiD 6.1.5b I can see at once only one of 
the two different domains (tria or quad). Is it possible to visualize the 
results in the gauss points for all the two domains (quadrilaterals _and_ 
triangles)?

Note that for the quadrilaterals the gauss points values (from the second 
row to the fourth) are not realistic in es03b.flavia.res, but this should 
not matter.

I have two questions:

1. It is possible create contact elements node to node (linear volumen) between
shells with 0 gap?.

2. When i create contact elements to nonlinear analisys, i use piramidal
elements, so every node has relation with four nodes, but how GID read
piramidal elements? to write calculation file.

3. I want create a load hidrostatic condition, so it has calculate a distance
from the coordenate system to CG of every plate element, it is possible
implement in GID or i have to do a calculate.exe.

Yes, see Create->Contact->Volume and select two surfaces in the same position.
(Contact->Separated Volume is for two surfaces with a rigid body movement)

Meshing are created prismas (if the surfaces are meshed with triangles) or hexahedral elements (for surfaces with quadrilaterals).

this is a mistake in GiD. If you numerate the elements from 1 to 4166,
you'll wee the contour fill colorus of the gauss point result.
it will be fixed for the next version

Hello, 

no, by now, it is not possible to see the result representation on
two separate gauss points 'domains'. We are working on the visualization
of multiple results over the same mesh.

    I have a small doubt about GiD.

    When I'm modelling a surface (for a shell calculation, e.g.) and I use automatic generation of NURBS with 4 surrounding lines, the direction of the normal is chosen by the program. The problem is that I (we all, I hope) have to be very carefull in order to apply the loads correctly, so that they are in the correct direction (for example, in CALSEF). So, is there a simple way to swap the normal orientation?. 

I have realized that this happens always when a part of the model has been generated by mirroring another part of it.

If the surface is in the XY plane, GiD automatically try to orient the normal pointing to positive Z axis.

If the surfaces are in 3D, the user can manually swap normals:
Utilities->DrawNormals->Surfaces 
select the surfaces to draw/modify the normals
then click the righ mouse button, and select in contextual menu (or in the right menu buttons) another option:
Options are:
- Swap some: changes the sense of the normals of the surfaces after selecting them again.
- All swaped: changes the sense of all selected surfaces, asking for confirmation for the change.
- Swap group: changes normals of all selected surfaces or elements so as all of them have its normal to the same sense that adjacent entities. This sense is arbitrary but common to all adjacent entities.
- Sel by normal: user is prompt to enter a vector and selection is reduced to entities that have their normal in the same sense (dot product positive) as the given normal.
- Color: With this option set, all surfaces are draw with filled color.Their front side will be drawn with their regular color, and their back face with yellow.

Note:
The right menu buttons are hidden by default, see utilities->graphical->toolbars to visualize it.

I am reading in a triangular mesh (using mesh read) which has a material
number associated with each element. i.e. in the elements part of the mesh
file I have:
element number     node1   node2  node3   material 

The mesh imports OK but I cannot find a way of viewing the material ID of
each element. The reference manual suggests there is a way of forcing each
material number onto a unique layer but I cannot find a way of doing it.

In GiD Preprocess:
If you list a element, the material is set to the readed number.
If a problem type is loaded before read the mesh, you can show the materials
by colors (if load the problem type after, the materials are reset).

To send to a layer all the entities with a "material number", you can write
in the command line (or selecting in the right buttons, hidden by default):

escape escape escape View  Layers Material "LayerName" "material number"

Note: This option is not directly available in the Layers Window.

In GiD Postprocess:
If you load the mesh in postprocess (with Files->Open "file-msh"), the
elements are separated in sets by material number.

The example does not use any kind of GiD's geometric contact it treat the
physical contact through GiD conditions assigned near the contact, the analysis
module  should compute the actual contact.
In this example GiD does not know about the geometric contact, and the
condition could be applied to any type of elements.

    There are several possibilities:

    - The simplest one is go to postprocess and read the file.
      Maybe it is necessary to use a recent beta for this.
    - In the preprocess:
      Open the right button toolbar (Utilities->Graphical->Toolbar)
      and use: Data Materials DrawMaterials DrawAll
    - Also in the right buttons, use: View Layers Material

    Commands accessed with the right buttons toolbar can also be
written in the command line.

i have a fundamental problem by generating a structured mesh (volume).
A simple case:
I have a cube where i need to divide the lines of the x-axe into 4 segments.
The lines of the y-axes into 5 and the lines of the z-axe into 6 segments.
I tried to generate the mesh like it is explained in the GiD Reference
Manual, but it did not work. Do I have to change some settings in the
preferences, or anywhere else?
The result of the generating was the division of the x-axe and the y-axe in
4 segments and the z-axe into 5 segments.

 I do not have an access to the user manual at the moment, so
I could not tell which part of it you are refereeing to.  However,
here is what I have just tried out now, which seems to work..!

1- Define the Cube using the: 
   "Geometry-> Create-> Prism (4 sides)"

2- Define the mesh properties:
   "Meshing-> Structured-> Volumes"

3- Choose the 'volume' that to be discretised,
   of course that is cube as a 3D solid object.

4- In the pop-up box "Enter number of cells to assign to lines"
   (type 4 and then pick up any of the cube edges which is 
    parallel to X)

5- Repeat step 4 for axis Y (5) and Z (6). Then choose cancel
   to quit the box.

6- Generate the mesh:
    "Meshing-> Generate"....

 Hopefully this will help,

it works with 2d-elements but with 3d the problemtype calculator writes the dxf-file but the system tells me that there is an error and the dxf is empty.

The dxf is written with Files->Import/Export->Dxf Write (useful to export points an curves)
or with a problem type writting directly the mesh (nodes and elements) ??

The problemtype DxfOut is a sample of GiD output mesh customization, 
and only works for triangles and quadrilaterals, not with hexahedrals. 

Any user can modify this sample, to write the 6 faces of an hexahedral as quadrilaterals.

A file batch contains direct commands of GiD, but it is not a programming language (with variables, loops, ifs, etc.).

What can become is that an external program writes directly a batch file based on certain variables.
Also a routine written in tcl language, can execute any GiD order by means of ".central.s process"

for example ...

set x 2.0
set y 3.5
set z 4.9
.central.s process "Geometry Create Point $x $y $z"

An user can modify the GiD menus to invoke your tcl procedure.

prism element (named contact elements).

Another type of contact is unkown for GiD. Usually a problem type define
conditions, for example, named "Source" and "Target" and is applied in GiD
to two families of surfaces (transferred automatically to elements or nodes
of the mesh). The condition stores the contact properties (friction, etc.)
and a ID common to Source and Target (for more than 1 contact).

I' not know if this form to treat a contact by means of a condition adapts
to your case. It would need to know that it exactly expects of the file
input the analysis program.

I suggest you these improvements for Gid.
1 - When there is many conditions in a problem, there is'nt an all list. In complex models, it's nescessary to see conditions one by one. Is it possible to add option entities/all_conditions in the data/conditions menu? the result will be resemble to that (ex:rambshell):

2 - To modify the dimension of a space object (ex: line(0,0,0   1,1.5,1.8) is very difficult because there is scale on x,y,z and they are not the same. 
Is it possible to define the axes as global or local in the utilities/copy or move/entities/scale: scale factors x,y,z global or local? 
if x local is parallel to the line, there is an x local scale factor, 1 for y and z. With that it's easy to modify the length of a line. The method is the same for surface and volume.

With Gid 6.1.4b, when i create an object circle, for the normal a dialog box appear. The x,y button are reverse with the result geometry.

I am currently evaluating a 30 day trial version of GiD (version 6) to
determine if we can easily integrate its pre- and post-processor
capabilities
with our in-house 3-D Non-linear Finite Element Analysis code.

The input file for our in-house code is a text file containing nodal
coordinates,
element connectivity, material type, element type, etc.

How can GiD be customized to produce output files in a format we can
easily
read/copy into our solver's text input file?

I apologize if this information is contained in the User Manual or the
Tutorials,
but I haven't been able to find it. I have had GiD for only 3 days and
have only
worked through a couple tutorials so far.

Any help will be appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail me directly if
this
information has been covered before. I only recently subscribed to this
list
and I have no idea what topics have been discussed already.

I write somme Gid configuration files. In a problem type file, we can write:
QUESTION: N_Entity#FUNC#(NumEntity)
VALUE: auto

The result is ok in *.bas file. But i need a "TypeEntity" seach as point, line, surface, volume. This is usefull for a program like below:
*set cond cond_surface *nodes
*add cond cond_line *nodes
*add cond cond_point *nodes

In the manual, i read, NumEntity is one of the availaible parameters. Whats the others?

*set var a=pow(b,1/3) is generating an error message, the command power(b,5) also. In the manual, some C format are valid for operation.

The pow function is not implemented.

The valid functions in the *.bas actually are:
 "sin","cos","tan","asin","acos","atan","exp","fabs","abs",
"sqrt",+,-,*,/,strcmp,strcasecmp
(,),=,<,>,!,&,|,
numbers and variables.

We will try to include the function "pow " for the next GiD beta version.

i have the fundamental problem that the generation of the mesh with two seperated volumes does not works like i want.
for example:
two boxes, one big and one small.
the small box is inside the big one. when i generate a structured mesh of both volumes, there is no relationship between the both meshes. i want that the boundary nodes of the small volume be part of the mesh of the big volume. how can i reach this??

The volumes do not have to be independent, must share the faces.
To mesh structured, is required manually subdivide the geometry to create 4-sided surfaces (2D) or 6-faces volumes (3D).

For example, see this picture of the division required to mesh a structured 2D tunnel. This 2D surfaces can be extruded to create a 3D structured geometry.
For structured surfaces GiD only require surfaces with "topologically" 4 faces, but for structured volumes GiD requires "exactly" 6 faces.

MaintainOldMesh is a configuration variable of GiD. These variables can be changed 
(in the command line or right buttons) with:
Utilities Variables "VariableName" "value"
for example, to set MaintainOldMesh=1:
escape escape escape Utilities Variables MaintainOldMesh 1

This option only is util to maintain the mesh of a separated piece
(is not available maintain a mesh and create another mesh sharing nodes with the old mesh).

RJUMP is a experimental mesher to mesh jumping lines between surfaces. Now It is slow an unstable.
Its use is still not advised, for this it is hidden, but to test it, you can set the variable SurfaceMesher to 4

I Use GID 6.1.2a to animate deformations from a crash simulation code which 
uses
explicit time step solutions.

Each time step has a slightly different deformation for the mesh. These are 
all possible to view in the traditional manner (using View Results -> 
Default time step / Deformation). The trouble begins when I want to animate 
the steps.

The animation just shows the mesh in an undeformed state
for all time steps EXCEPT the one I have previously selected in the Window - 
Mesh Deformation panel.

How can I make it show all of the deformations during the animation?

have you checked if the result's name is the same all the time steps?
in ftp://gid.cimne.upc.es/pub/gid/Examples
you can find the example: 'mensu.dat' and 'mensu.res' with 
four steps. Each one of these steps has the result 'DESPLACEMENTS'
which can be used to deform the mesh. The name of this result, its type,
its location, remain the same for all the steps, and only the step value varies.
When the deformation is animated, GiD shows the 'original' state and 
the four deformed ones with the same factor.

if your example still doesn't work, can you send us a short version
of the files, so we can take a lok into them?

You were exactly right Miguel. My displacement name was different.
I had put it different since I got an error regarding Gauss Points when I 
used the same name for all the time steps.
It turned out that the name needed to be 15 characters, just like in the 
example
you told me about.
Now it works fine!

 Hi,

 I get the error message "Swap Buffers failed" whenever
I try to run GiD on a PC with Windows 2000.  The machine
has a sufficient amount of RAM, and nothing was running
at the same time. The same version of GiD has been 
installed on other machines with (Windows 95 and 
Windows NT) where it works fine.  Just before I get into
more investigation on that PC, has anyone experienced 
any trouble with GiD running under Windows 2000..?

I' work with GiD under Windows 2000 professional, and never it has appeared
this problem.
Perhaps there is some conflict with the graphical card, try to deactivate
the OpenGL graphical acceleration  (start with GiD safe mode).

which graphics card are you using? and at what resolution? OpenGl programs experienced
problems with some ATI and Savage cards at 65536 colours/16 bit colour/ Hi-res colours.
have you tried to switch to 'True color' or '16 millions of colors':
'Start->Settings->Control->Panel->Display/Screen' in the 'configuration' panel?

are you using the latest drivers of your card?
if still does not work, in the meantime you can always switch to 256 colors.
in this mode the Windows OpenGL is being used, instead of the graphics card acceleration
and GiD should work without problems.

please, send us the file "problemtype.bat" to check it.

Try to rename the file command.exe (located in the same directory of
gid.exe)  to _command.exe (then the file "problemtype.bat" is executed as
GiD the old mode versions).

If your input file *.dat must be in a fixed format, check if this file is
correct with this format (take care of the spaces!

I am trying to model a 3D frame, which has beam elements, with 3 nodes and 
truss elements, with 2 nodes. If I use the option "Meshing/Quadratic 
elements/Quadratic", only linear elements with 3 nodes will be generated 
for the whole model. On other hand, using the option "Meshing/Quadratic 
elements/Normal", only linear elements with 2 nodes will be generated for 
the whole model.

Is there a procedure to create 2 and 3 nodes in a single model? I am using 
the 6.1.2 version of GiD.

In GiD, all the mesh is considered as quadratic or linear.
In order to have together both types it is necessary to make some "trick".

For example, a condition named "Truss" can be assigned to some lines, to
mesh all quadratic , but in the elements with this condition only two nodes
for the calculation are written, ignoring the central node.

Another possibility would be:
1- Mesh the linear elements
2- Write the mesh in disc (Files->Import/Export->WriteMesh)
3- Mesh the quadratic elements
4- Reload the linear mesh (Files->Import/Export->MeshRead)  option
AddNoShare
5- Collapse the mesh to join superposed nodes.

in have to know, which technic of gridgeneration is used by GiD for generating a structured grid. Is it possible to choose the technic or is it just one. I could not find an explaination in the users help.

      For unstructured mesh generation, GiD uses the advancing front
technique. For surface generation,
it uses two possibilities:

     - Mesh in the correspondat plane (RFAST)
     - Mesh in the space (RSURF)

    The structured mesh generation is based on the Coon algorithm and on
several properties of the
NURBS surfaces. It cannot be changed.

folgendes Problem:

Ich habe eine Grafik eingescant, sie unter Macromedia Freehand noch ein wenig bearbeitet und dann als EPS-Datei abgespeichert, so wie ich es mit allen selbst erzeugten Grafiken auch mache. Nur jetzt bekomme ich folgende Fehlermeldung unter Yap:
                Der Datenträger einer Datei wurde extern geändert, so dass die geöffnete Datei nicht mehr gültig ist. 

Ein erneutes Erzeugen der Datei unter einem anderen Namen erzeugt die selbe Fehlermeldung.
Hat jemand eine Ahnung, wo der Fehler liegt und wie ich ihn beheben kann?

I am trying load the stresses for quadrilateral elements, which have only

I had the same problem with you before. Your problem is the length of your
result description field. It should 15 characters long.
Your case is

It should be like

or try

Hello,

I need the _value_ of z coordinate for a set of nodes: I use this in a 
calculus for obtaining the nodal forces for an hydrostatic load.
I try with NodesCoord(3,real), but it doesn't work (I think this is just a 
write command for nodes).
Can anyone help me?

To obtain the z coordinate of a node in the *.bas file, the command  NodesCoord 
must be inside a loop over nodes, for example
*loop nodes
*NodesCoord(3,real) 
set var znode=NodesCoord(3,real)
*end nodes

You can also implement the hydrostatic condition whit a #FUNC# field of the condition
the value of this field is auto-calculated for each node/element 
(can use x,y,z of the node and another field values)
For example, in the *.cnd file:

NUMBER: 1 CONDITION: Hydrostatic
CONDTYPE: over surfaces
CONDMESHTYPE: over nodes
QUESTION: Fuid_z:
VALUE: 0
QUESTION: Density

at the moment only one result can be viewed at one time. So,
you can whether view the nodal displacements, or the plastic
strains at gauss points, but not both together.
We are working now to enable this capability in GiD.
